Weekend in the Sun

Cape Town really is a city of endless possibilities. With so many scenic drives and look out points, its hard to stop taking photos and with the ease of digital photography, why should I?
Friday after class I went up to Signal Hill, one point where you can easily drive up and see all sides of Cape Town. It was one of the first really "touristy" things that I've done since coming here, and it felt odd to be surrounded by tour buses and other tacky toursits. I don't really feel as though I fit in with the uber tourists, but not with the locals either. I fit in the middle somewhere, and so I'm making my own new category of visitor.

On Saturday, we drove out past Cape Town and to east along the coast to go for a hike just beyond Gordon's Bay. The views for the oceanside were just spectacular, and you could see all of False Bay. False Bay gets its name from the fact that the early explorers belived this is be the southern most tip of Africa, but later realized they were wrong.

Sunday was a day of much driving and the quest to see all the spectacular views within the Cape Town area. Two other "international" students, Robert and Nell from the Netherlands, had borrowed a video camera from UCT (university of cape town) and so they were out on a mission to make a good video from friends and family at home. We went up Constantia Nek drive and bought some fruit, and then went over to Groot Constantia for some wine tasting paying ~$4CAD for 6 1/2 glass samples of wine. Wine Farm Website
From there, we went down to Muizenburg and then up Boyles Drive. I would have more photos of this, but unfortunately I had taken them out of my camera to recharge! We then ventured to Chapman's Peak Drive, a lovely route that just reopened about a year ago.

Once over Chapman's Peak, we were back on the coast and took some photos of Camps Bay and up at Signal Hill again before the evening clouds rolled in.

It was a great day and in the end we were back at the Sports Science Institute to talk to friends and family who called on the land line phone here, send emails, and chat on MSN with the webcam. Sports Science Institute

Cheers!
