3 lists

List 1: Favourite foods of people in Cape Town
- Meat
There is meat everywhere. I had been warned that I would notice that there was a lot, but there really is a lot. Chicken, beef, pork, whatever whenever, or more like all the time.
- Bultong
This meat product is like beef jerky, although there are many South Africans who would be mad at me for even comparing the two. It's some sort of dried or smoked meat, that is about 1/2 an inch thick and has a peice of fat on the top. I've only tried it once, and that may be enough for me.
- Sweet chili sauce
I love this stuff. I'm not sure if we have it in Canada although I don't know why we wouldn't, but it's great. Use it for everything from sauces, to sandwiches to eggs. Delicious.
- Feta cheese
This may seem kind of weird, but I think everyone has feta cheese in their fridge at all times. Not that I mind, this is also very good.
- Cherry tomatoes
Same as feta cheese, and work nicely together so no complaints.
- Tuna and mayo & chicken and mayo
These are the most popular types of sandwiches, I would venture because of their protein content.
- Meat
Did I say this one already?

2. Relative costs of items in Cape Town
Groceries - 60-75% of the cost
Cigarettes - 20-25%
Wine - most expensive bottle I've seen hasn't been more than $10. Most are in the 3-6$ range.
Imported magazines (American) - 3x as expensive!

3. Odd jobs

- cleaning car windshields with old newspaper advertisements (make me
wonder if you can really clean with colored newsprint. I also saw one
of these men wearing a fleece from Blackcomb ski resort in BC, it was a
very strange image)
-handing out toilet paper and controlling the line (or que) in the
bathroom at bars and clubs (the most degrading just I've seen thus far)
-street vendors at intersections selling newspapers, roosters made from
old colored plastic bags, various bowls, statues, and mobiles
-collecting garbage from people when stopped at a red light, in hopes of
getting a tip for providing this service
-in the grocery store, having people located around the produce section
to weigh and tag your items
-in retail stores, an additional person around the change rooms to offer
friends of shoppers a chair while their friend is trying something on
-people constantly, I mean everyday in the same spot, sweeping sideways
free of falling leaves
-in parking lots, having someone to help direct you to a parking spot,
giving you verbal help if it's a difficult spot to pull into, and
providing "security". These people are everywhere, not just outside
shops but outside residential areas, and make their money by the tips
people give them when they get back to there vehicle.

What ever made you think to write about odd jobs? Are you looking for new possibilities? Love the food list too. What about fruit? Much available there. Remember those of us from AHW are checking to see if you are choosing healthy foods. Sounds like your trip is going well. Finally had a chance to catch up on your news. Gail
